Shale Shaker and Hydrocyclones for Solids Control or Mineral Processing

Shale shakers and hydrocyclones are both components of solids control equipment used in many industries, such as oil and gas drilling, coal bed methane (CBM), horizontal directional drilling (HDD), diamond drilling, water drilling. They used to separate drilling cuttings for first phase cleaning in a whole solids control system. They are also both used for mineral processing for classification or dewatering based on the materials’ particle sizes.

  1. Shale shaker or vibrating screens:

In a solids control system, once processed by the shale shakers, the drilling fluid is deposited into the mud tanks where other solid control equipment begins to remove the finer solids from it. The solids removed by the shale shaker are discharged out of the discharge port into a separate holding tank where they await further treatment or disposal.

A vibrating screen is a key piece of equipment in mineral processing. It’s used to separate feeds containing solid and crushed ores down to less than 200 μm in size. The vibrating screens take a tough job and also responsible for the heaviest burden for separation.

  1. Hydrocyclones

Hydrocyclones are a type of cyclonic separators that separate product phases mainly on the basis of differences in gravity. They are used with aqueous solutions as the primary feed fluid1. Unlike dry or dust cyclones, which separate solids from gases, hydrocyclones separate solids or different phase fluids from the bulk fluid.The hydrocyclone separator uses pressure created by a centrifugal pump or hydrostatic head to generate centrifugal force and flow patterns within the hydrocyclone. It does not have any moving parts.

Hydrocyclones have different sizes, in a solids control system, the most popular 2 sizes are 10 inch and 4 inch diameters. For mineral processing, larger sized hydrocyclones are adopted.

  1. In practice, the shale shakers are more efficient than hydrocyclones, and also consumes less power. That’s why more and more end users would like to replace the hydrocyclones by shale shakers, but there is a challenge that the cut point of shakers are not easy to become so small. Now GN high frequency fine sizer series vibrating screens can solve this problem by using flexible polyurethane screen meshes with fine apertures.

GN Desander and Desilter and Shaker to Indonesia Project

Indonesia is a country in South East China with a rich reservation of crude oil, and the oil drilling industry is quite active there. At first, years ago, all drilling companies are only buying from US or European companies for the equipment used in drilling procedures. But now, lots of them are turning to Chinese manufacturers like GN Solids Control, one of the leading international brands.

In a recent project, a client from Indonesia ordered a batch of solids control system from GN for 4 drilling rigs. They are following:

1.Shale shaker. Shale shakers are the first step solids control to remove particles above 100 microns from drilling fluids.

2.Desander cones, Desander are 10 inch cyclones with underflow shaker to remove particles larger than 40 microns. For this Indonesia project, GN offered a small sized underflow shaker. The underflow shakers for cyclones are used for the weighted mud.

3.Desilter cones, they are cyclones of 4 inch diameter for removing the 20+ micron particles from the drilling mud. They share the same working principle like the deander cones. Those desilter cones are also equipped with underflow screens.

4.Mud guns and mud agitators. They are auxiliary equipment for the whole solids control system but quite necessary. They prevent the mud from settling down to the bottom of tank.

GNLW364-VFD Decanter Centrifuge for Overseas Chemical Plant

In the fields of physical separating, the decanter centrifuges always play an important role. They are widely used in different industries, such as drilling of crude oil and gas, the waste water treatment, mining tailing, food and beverage industry, edible oil clarifying and animal waste treatment and etc. And chemical plant is another industry using decanter centrifuges. It is really not easy to cite out all the industries which are in need of decanter centrifuges. It is true that centrifuges are so useful and therefore, popular.

GNLW364 Decanter Centrifuge

1.A decanter centrifuge GNLW364-VFD together with a VFD control panel. GNLW364 is a two phase decanter centrifuge with a centrifuge bowl of 14 inch diameter and a bowl length 4 times of the diameter. Comparably, it is a longer centrifuge with a clearer separation result. It is an ideal choice for the chemical industry. And its cutting point is from 2 to 5 microns.

2.A polymer dosing unit GNSJY3000, and a screw pump in a set for dosing. The polymer is employed to a centrifuge system when the particle sizes are too small for the decanter centrifuge. Because the polymer need some time to be ready, an automatic dosing is a must here.

Drilling Waste Management Packaged Equipment for Europe client 

Drilling waste management system can be divided into 2 kinds when there is a drilling rig for oil and gas. It depends on the procedure of the rig’s solids control system and also the components used during drilling. When there is a drilling rig, there must be some drilling fluids cycling in a system, which is called a solids control system. Just as its name, this system is used to control the solids content in the drilling fluids and to remove the waste particles as many as possible in order to make sure the drilling fluids to reach the standard for reuse. Those waste solids are sands and small stoned brought by the drilling bit from the underground, which are of different sizes. In order to remove them, the solids control system is designed into several stages based on a certain particle size range: shale shaker, desander, desilter and decanter centrifuge.

The shale shaker is the first stage, which is a physical separating with simple principle: vibrating. Normally, the shale shaker can remove particles larger than 100 microns. And the actual separating point is determined by the shaker screens’ API number, which is chosen by the end user. Of course, there is a curve between capacity and cutting point, the finer the separating result is, the smaller capacity it reaches. And it is the shale shaker which remove the most solids particles. But there is a problem, that the particles removed by the shale shakers are still too wet, containing a certain amount of expensive drilling fluids. That’s why it is necessary to have some further treatment of the drilling cuttings from the shale shaker.
Besides the complete solids control system, GN Solids Control also provides professional solutions for drilling cuttings waste management. Just recently, an European client purchased such a system including following:

1.Cuttings feeding section: this section is used to collect the wet cuttings from the shale shaker and feed to the first stage of separating in a waste management system.

2.High G drying shaker section: it is especially designed for the water based mud, it looks similar as a normal shale shaker but with a higher G force.

3.Vertical cuttings dryer section: a vertical cuttings dryer serves same function as a high G drying shaker for the drilling cuttings under condition when oil based mud is used in the drilling system.

4.Screw Conveyor section: this section is used flexibly for transportation purpose between the treating equipment.

In this case, even when the drilling site uses both WBM and OBM, the waste management sections can be used flexibly.

GN Slurry Dewatering System for Construction Industry to New Zealand

As one of the leading separation solution provider in the world, GN Separation is becoming more and more popular among clients. In a recent project, GN has delivered to New Zealand a complete system for the slurry dewatering in a construction field. This system contains following equipment manufactured by GN:

1.Coarse screening stage, a GNLMP1536 Mining Vibrating Screens. Shale shakers are one of GN core products in oil and gas solids control industry, and the mining vibrating screens are another group similar with shale shakers. Comparing with shale shakers, the mining vibrating screens are just bigger in both machine size and screen opening sizes. In a slurry dewatering project, they are always used as a coarse screen at the very first stage for separation.

2.Double deck fine screening GNZJ706. The double deck shaker screen are used for fine screening. This shaker is equipped with 2 deck of shaker screens with different screen openings. In this case, the capacity is larger than the single deck one with same power consumption and space.

3.Desilter unit GNZJ594-12N. The desilter cones are used for separate out the particles around 20 microns by centrifugal force. And under below there is a vibrating screen for drying the particles. Liquid size is discharged to next step.

4.Big bowl centrifuge GNLW553D. The decanter centrifuge is used for fine separating for particles from 2 to 5 microns. GNLW553D decanter centrifuge has a bowl of 22 inch diameter and the length-diameter ratio is 3.

5.Chemical dosing unit. When there are extra fine particles in the liquid, the chemical dosing helps to flocculate the extra fine particles to be big enough for the centrifuge.

One unit of ATEX certified vacuum degasser and mud gas separator are ready for shipment to Europe client.
Mud gas separator, also called poor boy degasser, GN ZYQ series atmospheric pressure mud gas separator is a specialized equipment for primary degassing of gas cut drilling fluids, mainly used to remove gas cut drilling fluids with a diameter of approximately ≥ φ 3mm large bubbles. These large bubbles refer to the expansive gas that mostly fills a certain section of the wellbore annulus in the drilling fluids. If it is not removed, it will easily cause a kick or even spray out of the surface of the drilling disc.
GN ZYQ series atmospheric pressure anti hydrogen sulfide mud gas separator is made of high-quality materials, which can effectively prevent the erosion of harmful gases and ensure the safety of human machine production.


Features of GN mud gas separator:

  1. The poor boy degasser adopts bottom drainage to control the height of the working liquid level, ensuring a constant liquid level in the separator and solving the problem of sand accumulation in the tank;

1) vacuum pump, as a 100% air operated transfer pump, it has been widely used to transfer oil waste, oil sludge, industrial waste water, and other sludge with high solids content and high viscosity, the vacuum pump can be mobile or fixed type according to different models, the mini model GNSP-10B vacuum pump can be also used as vacuum cleaner for clean up jobs. It can be used to clean fluids from drill floors, decks, pipe racks, mud rooms, drains, tanks and other mud spill.
