Drilling waste management system can be divided into 2 kinds when there is a drilling rig for oil and gas. It depends on the procedure of the rig’s solids control system and also the components used during drilling. When there is a drilling rig, there must be some drilling fluids cycling in a system, which is called a solids control system. Just as its name, this system is used to control the solids content in the drilling fluids and to remove the waste particles as many as possible in order to make sure the drilling fluids to reach the standard for reuse. Those waste solids are sands and small stoned brought by the drilling bit from the underground, which are of different sizes. In order to remove them, the solids control system is designed into several stages based on a certain particle size range: shale shaker, desander, desilter and decanter centrifuge.

The shale shaker is the first stage, which is a physical separating with simple principle: vibrating. Normally, the shale shaker can remove particles larger than 100 microns. And the actual separating point is determined by the shaker screens’ API number, which is chosen by the end user. Of course, there is a curve between capacity and cutting point, the finer the separating result is, the smaller capacity it reaches. And it is the shale shaker which remove the most solids particles. But there is a problem, that the particles removed by the shale shakers are still too wet, containing a certain amount of expensive drilling fluids. That’s why it is necessary to have some further treatment of the drilling cuttings from the shale shaker.
Besides the complete solids control system, GN Solids Control also provides professional solutions for drilling cuttings waste management. Just recently, an European client purchased such a system including following:

1.Cuttings feeding section: this section is used to collect the wet cuttings from the shale shaker and feed to the first stage of separating in a waste management system.

2.High G drying shaker section: it is especially designed for the water based mud, it looks similar as a normal shale shaker but with a higher G force.

3.Vertical cuttings dryer section: a vertical cuttings dryer serves same function as a high G drying shaker for the drilling cuttings under condition when oil based mud is used in the drilling system.

4.Screw Conveyor section: this section is used flexibly for transportation purpose between the treating equipment.

In this case, even when the drilling site uses both WBM and OBM, the waste management sections can be used flexibly.

GN Slurry Dewatering System for Construction Industry to New Zealand

As one of the leading separation solution provider in the world, GN Separation is becoming more and more popular among clients. In a recent project, GN has delivered to New Zealand a complete system for the slurry dewatering in a construction field. This system contains following equipment manufactured by GN:

1.Coarse screening stage, a GNLMP1536 Mining Vibrating Screens. Shale shakers are one of GN core products in oil and gas solids control industry, and the mining vibrating screens are another group similar with shale shakers. Comparing with shale shakers, the mining vibrating screens are just bigger in both machine size and screen opening sizes. In a slurry dewatering project, they are always used as a coarse screen at the very first stage for separation.

2.Double deck fine screening GNZJ706. The double deck shaker screen are used for fine screening. This shaker is equipped with 2 deck of shaker screens with different screen openings. In this case, the capacity is larger than the single deck one with same power consumption and space.

3.Desilter unit GNZJ594-12N. The desilter cones are used for separate out the particles around 20 microns by centrifugal force. And under below there is a vibrating screen for drying the particles. Liquid size is discharged to next step.

4.Big bowl centrifuge GNLW553D. The decanter centrifuge is used for fine separating for particles from 2 to 5 microns. GNLW553D decanter centrifuge has a bowl of 22 inch diameter and the length-diameter ratio is 3.

5.Chemical dosing unit. When there are extra fine particles in the liquid, the chemical dosing helps to flocculate the extra fine particles to be big enough for the centrifuge.

One unit of ATEX certified vacuum degasser and mud gas separator are ready for shipment to Europe client.
Mud gas separator, also called poor boy degasser, GN ZYQ series atmospheric pressure mud gas separator is a specialized equipment for primary degassing of gas cut drilling fluids, mainly used to remove gas cut drilling fluids with a diameter of approximately ≥ φ 3mm large bubbles. These large bubbles refer to the expansive gas that mostly fills a certain section of the wellbore annulus in the drilling fluids. If it is not removed, it will easily cause a kick or even spray out of the surface of the drilling disc.
GN ZYQ series atmospheric pressure anti hydrogen sulfide mud gas separator is made of high-quality materials, which can effectively prevent the erosion of harmful gases and ensure the safety of human machine production.


Features of GN mud gas separator:

  1. The poor boy degasser adopts bottom drainage to control the height of the working liquid level, ensuring a constant liquid level in the separator and solving the problem of sand accumulation in the tank;
  2. The poor boy degasser tank is equipped with a dedicated gas separation channel, which allows for smooth gas evacuation and improves gas treatment efficiency;
  3. The mud gas separator adopts physical impact separation to ensure the gas separation effect;
    GN ZCQ series vacuum degasser is mainly used for separating gas from drilling mud, which is specialized equipment developed based on various types of vacuum degassers a for treating gas immersed drilling fluids. Suitable for various mud recycling systems, it is very important for restoring the specific gravity of mud, stabilizing the viscosity of mud, and reducing drilling costs.

What equipments we have shown at ADIPEC 2023?


1) vacuum pump, as a 100% air operated transfer pump, it has been widely used to transfer oil waste, oil sludge, industrial waste water, and other sludge with high solids content and high viscosity, the vacuum pump can be mobile or fixed type according to different models, the mini model GNSP-10B vacuum pump can be also used as vacuum cleaner for clean up jobs. It can be used to clean fluids from drill floors, decks, pipe racks, mud rooms, drains, tanks and other mud spill. Mainly the dredging slurry dewatering equipments including shale shaker ( to separate coarse solids and reduce solids content) , desander ( solids separation cut point 40 microns), desilter ( solids separation cut point 20 microns), big bowl dewatering centrifuge ( mechanical separation cut point 2~5 microns, working with chemical dosing to improve the separation efficiency), feeding pump, screw conveyor ( to transfer the discharged solids), mud tank for liquids storage, with pipelines for proper flow diagram. The working process is as below:


Firstly the shale shaker separate the coarse solids bigger than 300 microns by using proper mesh size shaker screen, secondly the desander cone to separate the 50~300 microns solids, the desilter cone to separate the 20~ 50 microns material, the dewatering centrifuge to separate fine solids to get clean water, which can be sent to waste water treatment facility if need. The solids can be transferred by screw conveyor to cuttings collection box and transfer to other area for construction area. The whole system meets the standard of North America usage.


The big bowl dewatering centrifuge is 30 inch bowl diameter, the bowl length is 131 inch, the designed capacity is 528gpm, the max G force is up to 3000G, the gearbox torch is 25000N.M., gearbox ratio is 38:1. The main motor is 160KW, the back drive motor is 90KW, the centrifuge is drived by the VFD control panel.

How to adjust GN shale shaker deck angle?

Shale shaker deck angle adjustment is one of the important operation for shale shaker usage. There are 2 types shale shaker deck angle adjustment method, one is electrical, one is mechanical, the deck angel adjustment is according to the drilling fluids solids size, density, feeding capacity, drilling fluids type, shaker screen type and mesh size, normally it is adjusted according to the user’s experience. GN shale shaker deck angle can be mechanically adjusted synchronously at both sides, it doesnot need 2 persons to operate the shaker at the same time, one person can do the work from one side, he can adjust both sides synchronously.
The tools to adjust the deck angle is ratchet wrench, which is stock in the tool box when delivery.


The operator holds the ratchet wrench and causes it to rotate to drive the lead screw elevator. The lead screw of the lead screw elevator drives the 4 lifting tube assembly to rise or fall, and the lifting tube assembly stops rotating when it reaches the ideal position. Through the above operations, the user can choose an appropriate angle for production based on the on-site mud performance and flow rate.

Screw conveyor manufacturer in China

As a screw conveyor manufacturer in China, GN solids control can produce screw conveyor with different size and transfer length as per client’s requirement.


Before selling, we will collect necessary information from our clients, including transfer materials, density, moisture, temperature, max particle size, solids content, etc. According to the reply, there are different material for selection, such as carbon steel, stainless steel SS304, SS316L, ASTM A36, etc. Also we will select proper models according to transfer flow capacity, conveyor angle( the screw conveyor can be installed horizontally and inclined, but the angle should be no more than 40 degree), the screw type (feeder type or conveyor type), feeding type ( flood load or uniform), installation condition (indoor, outdoor ), inlet port and outlet port, power supply, explosion proof standard, fixed speed or variable speed, and other information necessary. The screw conveyor quantity and models are also according to the site layout.


The screw conveyor is a traditional equipment to transfer the drilling cuttings, drilling fluids and other waste sludge from solids control system primary shaker or from waste pit. The tightly closed casing cover is utilized for better sealing result, except for drilling waste, the screw conveyor can be also used to transfer food, medicine, chemical, paper making, environmental solutions, metallurgy, building materials, electricity, coal ash, cement, sand, lump coal, cereals, etc.
GN can produce Screw conveyor with diameter 10inch, 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch and 18 inch, the transfer length is customized, each section is standard 12ft, there are 1 section, 2 sections, 3 section and 4 sections for option, with 12ft, 24ft, 36ft, 48ft length.
The screw flights are made of wear resistant and thicker manganese steel, reinforced frame outside the conveyor with high strength to the complete conveyor, the bearings are from NSK or FAG for reliable working.
