At the beginning of 2014, one customer from Cyprus who committed herself on oil service and solids control service buy one sets drilling cuttings treatment system to pro-handle the drilling cuttings/drilling waste from offshore rig. They have one plant to storage and treat the drilling waste.

 

The drilling cuttings treatment/dryness system including below items:

One sets VFD Verti-G dryer, this is replacement for CSI/ Swaco dryer.

One sets VFD Decanter Centrifuge, this is replacement for Derrick DE1000/ Swaco 518 centrifuge. High speed centrifuge can separate fine solids from drilling liquid after treated by Verti-G dryer.

One sets slurry pump which installed on the catch tank between Verti-G dryer and decanter centrifuge. This slurry pump is used for feeding centrifuge.

One set trailer mounted skid to hold all the equipment above.

 

The working process can be separated briefly as below steps:

Step 1: the drilling cuttings / drilling waste/ drilling sludge can be feed to Verti-G dryer by screw conveyor.

Step 2: the drilling cuttings / drilling waste/ drilling sludge be treated by Verti-G dryer. The operator can adjust the dryness by changing the rotation speed of the screen basket. The VFD control panel can help on it.

Step 3: the liquid parts will go to catch tank for storage; the solids parts can be collected by cuttings box.

Step 4: if the liquid parts is not flowable to be feed for centrifuge, the operator can add some base oil / water to dilute it. Then, use the slurry pump for feeding centrifuge.

Step 5: the centrifuge separate the fine solids from the waste; liquid part go to next equipment, Solids part collected by cuttings box.

Desander &Desilter Cones

In a solids control system, desander is the second stage equipment, which removes solids particle size 40-100μm out of drilling fluids. Then the next is desilter removing particle size 16-50μm out of drilling fluids. While, cone(also acknowledged as hydrocyclone) is the functioning part for both desander and desilter. In accordance with the size of cone diameter, cones are classified as desander cones with a diameter over 6’’ and as desilter cones with a diameter less than 6’’. Generally, 8’’ and 10” cones are generally utilized as desanders; 4’’ and 5’’ cones are often used as desilters.

You may be concerned about the cones’ working principle. You will find the answer in the following paragraph.

In normal operation, feed slurry is forced tangentially into the interior of the cone in a high speed, causing whirlpool effects inside the cone. The swirling motion of the slurry drives the larger and denser particles outward against the cone wall towards the lower discharge port, whereas the smaller, lighter particles move towards the center of the cone and go out through the upper discharge port. The separation of solids from drilling fluids is finished.

GN’s desander and desilter cones are made of polyurethane material, and adopt a removable assembly to be installed on a shale shaker.

Dewatering centrifuge with Flocculent Unit for drilling mud treatment

Dewatering centrifuge generally require high speed centrifuge with High-G force to separate ultra-fine solids from the water based drilling mud liquid part. GN Solids Control can offer different range of centrifuge from low speed to middle speed to high speed centrifuge for difference field application.

GN Low speed / middle speed centrifuge. Like GNLW452 centrifuge, with 1800rpm working speed, can used for barite recovery on solids control mud tanks.

GN high speed centrifuge, like GNLW453 and GNLW553 with big capacity, can reach to 2500rpm for barite recovery or mud weight cutting.

GN Vertical Cuttings Drying System Work Successfully at Shell’s Jobsite

In a standard OBM waste management system, there are mainly 2 equipments for treating the drilling cuttings, the first one is a vertical cuttings dryer. Recently, in a jobsite located in Sichuan Province in China for SHELL, GN’s waste management system including a vertical cuttings dryer and a decanter centrifuge.

GN Solids Control is the first solids control company who designed the vertical cuttings dryer. The vertical cuttings dryer is like a washing machine’s drying function, by means of centrifugal force, the vertical cuttings dryer separate the cuttings from the liquid via high rotating speed. Now GNCD 930 vertical cuttings dryer is having its 3rd generation, the drying efficiency, OOC could reach less than 5%. After it was manufactured, it was well tested in factory, and when it was took to jobsite, it was tested to be efficient in both OBM and WBM, and also SBM. The decanter centrifuge in this system is a very popular sized centrifuge with 14 inch diameter bowl and bowl’s length-dia ratio is ideal 3. This centrifuge in practice is not only used in waste management system as in the video, but also widely used in solids control systems for cutting the mud weight or barite recovery and also used together with flocculating equipments as package with dewatering units.

GN drying Shakerwas designed with a two-motor system that can operate the linear motion mode, allowing the operator to tune the G-force down and up depending on the drilling fluids conditions. It provides operator flexible way to make the adjustments based on the condition and volume of drilling fluids across the shaker surface. The shaker can behandled with high G-force for highflow rate but can be turned down to a less vibrating mode for cutting solids flow and volume.GN shakers were recently deployed to many drilling site.

Belt Conveyor in GN made Mud System for Singapore Customer

Hebei GN Solids Control Co., Ltd is the first API certified solids control company in China. Screw conveyor is also called Auger which is used to collect and transfer the drill cuttings from the shale shaker to vertical cuttings dryer or cuttings collection box for further treatment. For better operation and maintenance of GN screw conveyor, the following instructions should be followed up:

1 GN standard screw conveyor is composed of 12ft length each section, 2 section, 3 sections or 4 sections for choice. At the end of each auger, there are 2 bearings, which should be lubricated regularly. There is suspension bearing at the end of each section, which should be added grease every 2 weeks.

GN provide options of screw diameters for 12inch, 14inch, 16inch and 18inch.

2 Gearbox is installed at the end of the screw conveyor, it should be lubricated every 6 months according to the operation instructions.

3 The screw conveyor should be installed properly and carefully when it arrived at the jobsite, then placed correctly and tighten the anchor bolts.

How to Change Belt Pulley for Fixed Speed Centrifuge

Fixed speed centrifuge is popular with some customer in tight budget. This kinds of centrifuge is not that easily to use when you shift between different projects with different material property, or when the treating material property change and require centrifuge working with different speed. Why say like that?  Because it takes some time to change belt pulley to get different bowl speed. If the user is familiar with the process on belt pulley change, it may only takes 2-3 hours; However, if the user is not familiar with process on belt pulley change and lacking of some necessary tools, things may be harder and it may takes some days to find the necessary tools first and then, you can done the job.

1) What we need to change belt pulley for GN fixed speed decanter centrifuge

In order to service the customer better, GN Solids Control will offer one tools box containing some necessary tools for centrifuge operation and belt pulley change. The tools including but not limited to below items:

Spanner/Wrench, Grease gun, Screw nuts and screw pine, Tape, Pine wrench, Puller, Drilling Waste Management System, Arm crane Etc.

 

2) The process to change the belt pulley

 

Firstly, we need to release the main motor and put it close to the auxiliary motor;

Secondly, we need to disconnect the rubber connection between auxiliary motor and conveyor;

Thirdly, we need to remove the belt pulley with the coupling;

Fourthly, we need to disconnect the belt pulley from coupling;

Fifthly, we need to put the new belt pulley on the coupling

Sixthly, we need to put back the belt pulley with coupling back to the main motor.

Then, reverse the process one step by one step.

 

The best way is to learn the process from the manufacturer. Different manufacture with different design of centrifuge; GN Solids Control can offer jobsite service if customer request. And also, the customer can come to GN factory to learn about it.

The Need to Know Regard on Mud Cleaner

Check power voltage to see if normal before turn the motor on.
Check all the bolts are properly tighten before turn the motor on.
Check all the shaker screen are properly secure with wedge block.
Check if  there is any foreign objects on the shale shaker.
When the cleaner operate at normal condition , there should be minimum  noise and  the operation should be smooth and steady, if there is any unusual noise, stop and check the equipment immediately.
If the connection cable between vibration motor and the control panel has been changed because of maintenance or changing motor, the cleaner will not  work effectively. It needs take off the shield at the end of the vibration motor, connect the power and observe whether the rotation directions of the two vibration motors are opposite direction. If not, then it needs adjust to be opposite direction.
When change the vibration motor, adjust the rotate  blocks on the two vibration motors to be consistent.
After tighten the bolts of vibration motor, have a check every 8 hours, if there is any loosen, tighten it.
When the vibration used for about 500 hours, inject some of specific lubricant grease(about 80g).
The control switch is explosion-proof, do not open if not necessary. If need to check for issue,  it needs turn off the power first. When check the equipment for possible issue, do not be neglected details or wrong installed, to guarantee the explosion-proof.
The wedge of shaker screen should be checked each 8 hour, if there is any issue of loosen, tighten it on time.
With compact the shaker screen, the tension force of each bolt is 5KN.
When the cleaner is used for 1000 hours, some lubricating grease should be injected into the grease box.
If the springs damaged, change the springs as soon as possible. When changing the springs, the screen box should be raised, and put the springs on the spring bases, then ease-down the screen box.
