Facts on how to select drilling fluid filtering system

The drilling fluid filtering systemis function like human heart that provides zero-discharge oh drilling fluid.  Such system is a big ticket items and there are some facts need to consider before make purchase.

1) Type of drill you will be using1500 gpm mud recycling system
2) The drill rate
3) The type of solids
4) The length of your bore
5) The GPM (gallon per minute) of the pump
6) The mud tank volume that will need
7) The number of Hydrocyclones
8) The screen size and API number

These factors determine your usefor drilling fluid filtering system that is adequate enough to clean the mud and protect the components and the drill bit of the rig, pumps and mud cleaners.

Gallons per Minute: When deciding the size of a drilling fluid filtering system that you will need, it is best to double the amount your GPM Need.   For example: If you are pumping 250 gals, you would want consider with a 500-gpm unit.

Trailer or Skid mount: Depending on your requirements, drilling fluid filtering systems can be either trailer mounted or skid mounted. Trailer-mounted units require dedicated trailer (built to unit). Skid-mounted unit can be removed from trailer which releases the trailer for other jobs requirements.

Screen surface: larger screen surface area you have means more volume of drilling fluid that can be process and clean.

Screen selection: The mesh size (API #) of screens is measured by the number of opening per square inch on the screen. Various mesh sizes control the size of the debris that can be removing. The same mesh size will not work in every drilling condition. Sizes will vary depending on the size of the debris and the type of formations you are cleaning.

Shakers: There are three different kinds of shakers (orbital, elliptical and linear). Orbital is a circular motion and elliptical isn’t perfectly circular — it’s an ellipse or oval. Linear has vibration that is induced by a pair of eccentric (or eccentrically weighted) shafts turning in opposite directions. This type of arrangement allows for the development of straight line or linear motion that can also be produced in a positive (uphill) incline.
While each shaker has a specific place that it will stand-out from other choices such as unit selling price, the ability to process heavy clays and rock or fines and ultra-fines, our overall preference of choice is the linear.

Hydrocyclones: Depending on the size of the mud system you choose, the cone size will either be 4 or 10 in. Each size cone has a micron cut point, which is the size of the smallest particle that the cone can pull out. The 4 inch cones have a micron cut of 20 microns and the 10 inch. Have a 74 micron cut.

Decanter Centrifuge: build purpose to filter solids between 2-5 micron and main purpose to recover barite for re-use as additive back into the drilling fluid.  It operates in G centrifugal force that control in fixed or changeable RPM of rotate bowl to achieve separation.

Main Parts of GN Shale Shaker

Shale shaker is the first stage machine to clean drilling fluids out from wells, indispensible both in a solids control system for oil and gas and mud system for other kinds of drilling. Driven by dual motors, GN shale shaker is liner motion with adjustable G force max to 7.5 G. Normally, a shale shaker contains below main parts:

The vibrator motors are attached directly to the screen frame and positioned over the screening bed to maximize the G-forces transferred to the screen surfaces. Float mounts isolate the vibratory motion of the screen frame from the support structure. Screens are fixed on the screen bed by wedges ,which is much easier to operate and improve work efficiency. The adjustable while drilling (AWD) mechanism is achieved by one electric motor that allows adjustment of the screen bed angle between -1°and +5°(The two-panel shaker deck angel is fixed at +2° ).This combination of features maximizes the fluid-handling and solids-removal capabilities of the machine.

 

The drilling fluids from mud return line of the drilling rig feed into the buffer box, then over flow to the shaker deck and shaker screen. The shaker motor motivate the fluids flow from one side to the other side of the shaker. While moving ,the fluids will down the screen to the collection box and the cuttings are discharged at the other end of the shaker. What’s more, the desander cones, desilter cones, or both of them can be added into the shale shaker installed on a frame fixed over the shale shaker. According to the quantity of cones, different models of shale shaker will be selected as underflow shaker.

The method of use mud cleaner

The correct installation and use of hydrocyclone mud cleaner can filter unwanted solids from the mud to achieve controlled velocity.  It is important to use mud cleaner properly to ensure the quality of treated drilling mud.

  1. The correct position of hydrocyclone mud cleaner for whole mud system is behind shale shaker which filter large solids at first step.
  2. The drilling mud prior enter the hydrocyclone must be processed through shale shaker first.
  3. Check the power source and once motor is start, check direction of rotation of the motor rotate in correct direction.
  4. Seeking unusual noise from motors after turn on the machine
  5. Secure the screen and hand feel the strength of the screen.  Initiate the test-run fluid and check if screens are intact.  Check every moving parts while machine is on
  6. Clean the screen by end of each shift to prevent blockage of mesh and extend the usage life of screen
  7. Stop the feeding of mud should turn off the pump first and keep on the shale shaker for another few minute and wash the screen, then shut down the shale shaker
  8. Re-grease the bearing as needed for proper moving on machine parts
  9. When the feed liquid pressure equal to the rated pressure, turn off the valve on the overflow tube, make the tubular value of the overflow pipe is 0.01-0.03mpa. When the feed pressure below the rated pressure, adjust the valve on the over-flow, make the tubular value of the overflow pipe is .0.02-0.05mpa.
  10. For every 500 operation hours, the machines need regulator maintenances by checking moving parts and replace parts as necessary.
  11. For every 4000 operation hours, the machine needs overhaul by doing maintenance list above and replace the hydrocyclone and check that insulation of electrical parts of the machine.

Desanding unit for piling, microtunneling, and trenchless construction

Desanding plant also called desanding unit. It is more and more widely used for pipe construction, micro tunneling, water well drilling, HDD, CBM, or other kind of trenchless projects. As more and more government increase the standard for discharge, drilled mud cannot be discharged directly as previous. Recovery system like desanding unit is as a necessary request of the trenchless machine and rigs.

 

There are many customers they do not use the desanding plant before, and do not have much understanding on the application and function of the desanding system. Blow is the normal question they will ask.

 

Question 1: What is the function of the desanding unit mud system? What we can get from the system?

The desanding unit is used to recovery clean mud from the drilled mud. There are big quantity clean mud in the drilling mud came out from well head. The desanding unit can be used to recovery the clean mud, and reuse it for drilling activity. It can reduce your cost on drilling mud. As most of the clean mud in drilling cuttings have been recovered by the system, it reduces the quantity of solids charge. And after separation of shale shaker and cyclone parts, the solids discharge become dryer and easy for transport.

 

Question 2: How is the desanding unit mud system working?

There are normally 2 or 3 phase separation for the dirty mud from trenchless drilling rig.

The 1rst phase solids control separation: Dirty mud will be fed to shale shaker for to separate the bigger sides solids.

The 2nd phase solids control separation: 10’’ Desander cone. Mud from shale shaker transferred to desander cone through centrifugal feeding pump, solids above 47 microns can be removed after this step.

The 3rd phase solids control separation: 4’’ Desilter cone. Clean mud from desander cone will come out from top of the cone assembly and flow to the desander tank, solids will be discharged outside the system. There will be a centrifugal pump used to transfer mud from desander tank and feed to desilter cone. Solids above 27 microns can be removed after this step.

Operator can choose to only use desander cone or desilter cone, or use both per jobsite condition.

Mixing system is optional for customer. Customer can choose to combined system with mixing, or a separation system with separate mixing, or even build the mixing system locally.
